MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHERS RECOGNIZED
Manchester, New Hampshire
Three outstanding teachers were recognized as the "2007 New Hampshire Mathematics and Science Teachers of the Year" at the annual Engineers' Week Banquet held at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester on Thursday, February 22nd. The awards are presented annually to recognize excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in New Hampshire schools.
Patricia Sugrue, a 1st-4th grade teacher at Hampstead Central School, was selected in recognition of her excellence in the teaching of mathematics. A parent of one of Patty's students wrote; "… my daughter had very little confidence in this key content area and was often outspoken at home about her dislike of math. Through working regularly with Mrs. Sugrue, my daughter has been able to gradually build both understanding of essential math concepts as well as her own confidence as a competent math student. …Mrs. Sugrue has been able to assess my daughter's needs and to instruct her in a way demonstrative of a highly skilled educator."
Sandra Ouellet, a 5th grade teacher at Hampstead Middle School, was selected in recognition of her excellence in the teaching of mathematics. A colleague of Sandra's wrote; "I have been amazed at how tirelessly Mrs. Ouellet has worked to encourage identified youngsters to attain math skills beyond their perceived ability levels. She does this, not with the use of technological wizardry, games, or token reinforcement…, but with quiet encouragement, gentle guidance, profound respect, and a firm belief that each child will succeed if he or she questions often, reasons soundly, listens always, and shares ideas constantly."
Christopher Ginty, a 9th-12th grade teacher at Merrimack Valley High School, was selected in recognition of his excellence in the teaching of science and mathematics. One of Chris's students wrote; "What more could any teacher aspire to be than what Mr. Ginty is to me - an inspiration, an exemplary role model, an attentive listener, and an educator who will never be forgotten and whose lessons will serve me for my lifetime."
The New Hampshire Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year awards program was initiated by the New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers to show appreciation for the contributions that mathematics and science teachers make in developing student skills and interest in mathematics and science; areas fundamental to the practice of engineering. The awards are co-sponsored by the University of New Hampshire College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, New Hampshire Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers, New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics, New Hampshire Science Teachers Association, and the New Hampshire Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
