MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHERS RECOGNIZED
Manchester, New Hampshire

Two outstanding teachers were recognized as the "2006 New Hampshire Math and Science Teachers of the Year" at the annual Engineers' Week Banquet held at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester on February 23rd.  The awards are presented annually to recognize excellence in the teaching and learning of math and science in New Hampshire schools.

Martha Miller, a fourth and fifth grade teacher at South Londonderry Elementary School was selected in recognition of her excellence in science teaching through the demonstration of big ideas, hands on experiments, computer/technology, research, drawing and diagramming, and video, giving students information in many different formats.  Mrs. Miller runs a program where students create and run their own businesses, teaching them the realities of marketing, retailing and competition, while honing their math, communication, and computer skills.  Mrs. Miller also runs a Chess Club two days a week after school and is active at the School District level in the new teacher Induction Program and the Professional Development Site Committee.

Daniel Shagena, a 9th-12th grade teacher at Bishop Brady High School in Concord was selected in recognition for his excellence in the teaching of mathematics.  A former Captain in the United States Air Force, Mr. Shagena has taught all math levels including AP Calculus, and this year has designed and started a JAVA computer programming class for seniors.  Mr. Shagena expects and knows how to elicit excellence from his students, incorporating reading, writing, and research into the mathematics curriculum.  In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dan is a faculty moderator of the school's Math Team, as well as the Varsity Boy's Baseball coach.

The New Hampshire Math and Science Teacher of the Year awards program was initiated by the New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers to show appreciation for the contributions that math and science teachers make in developing student skills and interest in math and science; areas fundamental to the practice of engineering.  The awards are co-sponsored by the University of New Hampshire College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, New Hampshire Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers, New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics, New Hampshire Science Teachers Association, and the New Hampshire Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
